Colchicine.ca Launches Online Resource for Gouty Arthritis

July 25, 2011 by Lynn.

Cases of gout in Americans are on a decades long upswing. In fact, the incidence of gout doubled between the 1960s and the 1990s, and is continuing to climb. Gout, or gouty arthritis, is one of the most painful types of arthritis. It accounts for about 5 percent of arthritis cases, effecting almost 850 out of every 100,000 Americans. Gout is nine times more common in men than in women, and tends to hit between the ages of 40 and 50.

A new online resource, www.Colchicine.ca, has been created to help educate Americans on the symptoms, causes, prevention and treatment of gout. Untreated or inadequately treated gout is not only extremely painful; it can permanently damage and disfigure joints and tissue.

Gout is caused by a build up of uric acid in the joints. The excess uric acid forms needle sharp crystals that irritate and inflame the cartilage around the joints, usually at the base of the big toe. Gout is characterized by a sudden onset of intense pain, swelling, redness, heat and stiffness. Many gout sufferers can not even bear the weight of a bed sheet on their foot during an attack.

Colchicine is considered one of the most effective gout medications, but the price of colchicine in the US has soared from about 5 cents a colchicine tablet to almost $5 a tablet since the FDA's Unapproved Drug Initiative led to the removal of cheap generic colchicine from the market in 2010 in favor of the brand name colchicine Colcrys.

The new online resource contains a wealth of constantly updated information on gout, gout treatment and gout prevention not found in one place anywhere else, including:

- why gout is more dangerous in women than in men
- new developments in gout treatment
- affordable alternatives to high priced Colcrys
- gout medications and natural remedies for gout
- the connection between gout and diet
- gout myths and misconceptions
- links to gout quizzes, videos, newsletters and other resources

So if you or someone close to you is wondering what the heck is pseudogout or gout tophus, if goutweed is really an effective gout treatment, or how other gout sufferers are using baking soda and poultices to deal with the excruciating pain, check out Colchicine.ca.

Exercising to Ease Gout Flares

February 1, 2012 by Julia.

Exercising on the river
Exercising on the river
Gout flares can be both painful and debilitating. Throbbing pain in your knee or foot usually makes your exercise decision for you. No one wants to have to hobble from machine to machine, or even to have to lace up your tight running shoes. However, some gentle exercise can often have a positive long term outcome on your gout flares. Although exercise can not remove all traces of uric acid from the body (diet changes are needed for this), gentle exercises definitely help to prevent future buildup of the dreaded uric acid, reducing the frequency and severity of gout flares.

But how to start? Your first step should be talking to your doctor. Your doctor can recommend which specific exercises can be safely used on your body. Everyone has gout in different parts of their body, and what works for your friend may have a negative effect on you. Also, remember that if you have a gout flare-up, be sure to stop exercising. You can get back on your schedule once the pain is gone.

"Range of motion" exercises tend to be a core element in a gout exercise regimen. Exercises such as tai chi, band exercises and gentle yoga are great for keeping the joints limber. This maximizes circulation in these areas, often clearing out uric acid. Range of motion exercises also reduce stiffness, which if left unchecked, can lead to loss of mobility, weight gain, and unnecessary pain.

Another great group of exercises to add to your regime are strength training exercises. With painful joint swelling from gout, sufferers often lose mobility and range of motion, also leading to a loss of strength in knees, ankles and hands. Using light weights, and building up your repetitions over time can counteract this. Squats are also a great option to strengthen the legs while keeping the knee joints mobile.

Stretching is an essential part of any workout. Once slightly warmed up, you should gently stretch out your muscles in order to prevent exercise injuries. Stretching promotes the flushing of uric acid, which is great for reducing the regularity of gout flares.

Increasing your exercise over time with gentle stretching and range of motion exercises can be a great addition to dietary changes and medicines prescribed by your doctor. Exercising combined with gout medicines such as colchicine should significantly reduce the frequency and severity of your gout flares. After you feel more limber and have more mobility, try some light strength training exercises. If these are not helping your gout pain, your doctor may suggest that you buy Colcrys or other anti-inflammatory drugs.

The Story of Colchicine

April 13, 2012 by Julia.

Colchicine Tonic
Colchicine Tonic
Check out this awesome article from the Lancet about the history of gout and the rise of colchicine! It came into use over 200 years ago! Gout also used to be considered a sign of status - only those who ate more expensive foods and lived more sedentary lifestyles would develop gout.

Once gout was seen often in the population, 18th century doctors began mixing cocktails reputed to stop or prevent gout. Most of them were made with an alcohol base, which we know now must have made the flare-ups worse! Luckily for 18th century gout sufferers, eventually an American colonial doctor added a local plant to his tonic...that plant turned out to contain colchicine.

If your doctor prescribes colchicine for gout, consider buying online at a Canadian pharmacy. You can buy Colcrys for significantly less online than you would pay at an American pharmacy.

View "Bitter medicine: gout and the birth of the cocktail" on the Lancet's website here.

Big Mountain Drugs Offers Discount Coupon and Safety Tips in Regarding to Prescription Medication

April 30, 2012 by Julia.

Big Mountain Drugs

Big Mountain Drugs is helping the green movement this week by offering a prescription drug coupon for everyone who recycles their unused prescriptions. The coupon code is valid for fifteen dollars off of any prescription, and is available for a week only. All new customers can use the coupon code rx15 to receive the discount on their medications. This coupon is particularly useful for customers who buy daily prescriptions such as generic Plavix and generic Lexapro.

Multiple towns in Louisiana are providing special drop zones for customers to safely dispose of their unused prescription and over the counter medications. When unused medications expire, patients often flush them down the toilet, or dispose of them with their household garbage. What many people do not realize is that the flushed medications can enter the water system. There, they can be ingested by plants and animals, or taint the ground water supply. Be sure to safely dispose of your medications in the proper locations, just like a refrigerator or computer disposal. From there, you can buy your prescriptions with the confidence that you are not unduly affecting your environment.

With the constant turnover in your medicine cabinet, you may be noticing a financial burden. However, there are many ways to save on your medications. Buying generic medications is one of the best ways to save money on your prescription purchases. A generic is a medication that has an expired patent. Generic alternatives to expensive brand name medications such as Lipitor and Advair are chemically and therapeutically the same as the brand-name original, but cost significantly less, as the manufacturer does not have to recoup expensive marketing, research, and development costs. Remember to also use coupons wherever possible. Buying online offers many more buying options, such as generic or brand name, or the availability of coupons.

Big Mountain Drugs, an online pharmacy based out of Vancouver, British Columbia, offers certified Canadian pharmacy care at lowered prices. Their mission is to provide safe and reliable medications to their customers. The Canadian pharmacy also partners with sites such as http://www.colchicine.ca/ to provide the most up-to-date information on available medications; both brand name and generic alternatives. New Gout Recommendations Highlight Lifestyle Changes

May 29, 2012 by Estella.

May 22 Gout Awareness Day
May 22 Gout Awareness Day
New gout recommendations from the American Society of Clinical Rheumatologists (ASCR), published in Postgraduate Medicine, highlight updated management recommendations for patients with acute gout. There are a total of 26 key recommendations, 10 for diagnosis and 16 of management.

Gout in the U.S. has risen and now affects 8.3 million people approximately 4% of the adult population. New finding suggests that the risk of gout is nearly double in those who were obese compared with those who were not obese.

Instead of challenging, restrictive dieting, patients are encouraged to consume a balanced diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, low-fat dairy products, nuts and grains. More importantly, patients should limit their intake of high fructose corn syrup, a common ingredient in many processed foods and drinks, and purine-rich foods, particularly red meat, beer and shellfish. Managing other conditions is extremely important in gout patients. Making changes to diet and lifestyle may not be enough for patients who also have health risks such as hypertension, obesity and smoking.

"Gout Awareness Day is an opportunity for medical professionals to focus attention on this disease that affects so many, yet has little understanding by the public," said Dr. N. Lawrence Edwards.

Low-dose colchicine is better tolerated and is as effective as a high dose. To read the full release, please visit: http://www.multivu.com/mnr/56234-gout-uric-acid-education-arthritis-lifestyle-change-treatment-options

Can Stress Aggravate Gout?

September 14, 2012 by Teresa.

Stress siren
Stress siren
Stress may be causing you to shake your head in frustration. That six-letter word is taking the blame for everything from headaches to heartaches these days. Since the day of the caveman, the world has been full of enough uncertainty to make stress unavoidable. Yet, once again, although it may be unavoidable, it does produce consequences.

When it comes to those unfortunate sufferers of gout, stress makes no exception to the rule. There seems to be a correlation between long-sustained stress and flareups of pain related to gout. Stress does serve a purpose. It can motivate us to get out of the way of trouble or alter our lifestyle for an improved quality of life. However, to be in a constant state of stress is not recommended.

Medications such as Colchicine, in particular Colcrys which is FDA approved, can certainly help gout sufferers manage their pain. In addition, there are natural methods that can be included in a treatment plan. Learning to manage stress is one of several complimentary approaches that when combined with medication provides good results.

Gout is caused by an excess secretion of uric acid in the blood stream. Stress, however, has been shown to deplete vitamin B5 from the body. Guess what? Vitamin B5 helps to remove excess uric acid from the body. Therefore, stress may trigger a gout attack. One thing is for sure, if there are simple methods that can improve your odds of avoiding a gout attack, then why not consider them. Furthermore, the numerous residual effects of reducing stress will offer many benefits to the overall quality of life. It is a win/win situation!

Methods to Help Reduce Stress
Believe it or not, moving, at any age, is what we were intended to do. Remember, if you don't use it, you will lose it. That old saying still has merit. Exercise, even milder forms, is a great stress reliever. Try it! Even a few ten-minute sessions a day of gentle exercise are worthwhile. If you can manage more, then go ahead.

Various forms of meditation, self hypnosis, and the practice of imagery have shown measurable benefits in patients who deal with daily pain. Join a meditation group or purchase some wonderful CDs to listen to in the comfort of your own home. Start your morning with a mindfulness that is deliberately focused on remaining calm and capturing a feeling of well being.

Avoid people and situations if at all possible that cause unnecessary stress. After all, you are responsible for your own health. No one else can meet your needs in the same way that you can. Pay attention to the stress triggers in your life and deliberately design a strategy to remove yourself from anything that is not in your best interest. It is your life and your body.
